Which Device Do You Use GPSMap OS on ???

Postby Mike D on Fri Sep 28, 2007 9:19 pm

I have mine working on an unlocked HTC Wizard with an updated ROM flashed onto it, (petty much the same as a T-Mobile MDA, O2 XDA, Q-Tek 9100) running Windows Mobile 5 with a 2Gb SD card as storage. This gets its GPS from a Bluetooth GPS receiver.

Seems to work very well. I also use it to run TomTom 6 for road navigation too.

what GPS unit?

Postby mgaved on Sat Sep 29, 2007 4:04 pm

Hi Mike

what GPS unit do you have? I am running GPSMap on a Fujistu-Siemens Loox T830 with its built in GPS. I've been loaned a QTEK 9100 and I was wondering about checking out buying a GPS unit for it. Any recommendations?

(in case you're wondering about the multiple PDAs and whether I have more money than sense, I am working as a researcher at The Open University and we're exploring different devices... so I am lucky enough to be doing this as part of my research! :) )

Hi Mark,

I'm using a JRT-29 Bluetooth GPS which I got off eBay for 23 quid inc postage. The seller had plenty for sale. It is probaly a generic type of unit. This is the same type of unit, but not the same seller. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Bluetooth-42-Channel-GPS-receiver-device-PDA-Car-Lab_W0QQitemZ160162849424QQihZ006QQcategoryZ4668QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem.

The seller of mine was based in Hong Kong and the unit took about 5 days from order to delivery. I seem to get around a 4m-5m accuracy on this and was very surprised when I went for a walk yesterday and then downloaded the .kml file into google earth. It seems to get a GPS signal very quickly too, even from a cold start. A bonus is that it uses the same type of charger as the phone, a mini USB plug, so this means only one charger in the car.

On the Phone/PDA I use the Franson GPS Gate as this enables me to use both TomTom and GPSMap go simulataneously. I had to make sure the settings in the phone didn't turn the unit off when on battery power. I have it set to just turn the screen off and leave the unit running. The Bluetooth paired up easily with the GPS and even when turning on the GPS after a few days it finds the phone and they connect flawlessly. I have just bought and external waterproof antenna so I can put the GPS unit in my rucksack and not have worries about it getting wet bit still get a signal.

I don't know about more money than sense, 'cos I'm thinking of getting a standalone PDA for off road navigation purposes. I'm looking at a Dell Axim x51v - seems to have a real good sized screen, but I'm not really clued up on PDA's tho :(

I'm off walking tomorrow - probably Lakes, but may go to Yorkshire Dales and will test the unit in anger, so to speak.
I'll keep you informed. :D

Cheers,

Mike.

I’m using a Mio P350 pocket PC which has a Samsung2440 400Hhz CPU, 3.5” LCD a built in GPS module, 20-channel SiRFStarIII chipset (£170 delivered new).

It presently has 1 GB SD card with Tom Tom 6 for the road, V1.4 of GPSmap, a few MP3 albums and plenty of space left.

I’m well impressed with the unit though I haven’t used it in anger off road yet. The only down side is the on/off button can be easily pressed accidentally when in a pocket etc.

Cheers,

Simon.

I am using O2 XDA Mini S with bluetooth GPS unit (GP-27, made in TaiWan?). I bought both from eBay with a 2Gb card and TomTom5. The TomTom 5 never worked. So I cannot enjoy navi.

Just bought a Mio 268+ GPS (going cheap for £70 because it has 2005 maps and an old version of MioMap).

Good thing is that it can be unlocked to Win CE.NET 4.2 and you can then install what you like on it - see gpspassion.com

Managed to get GPSMap working fine, using the v3 compile rather then v4. To get the GPS connection working, I had to edit the registry directly to use COM2 instead of COM8, as the GPS settings screen is too large (the device only has a 320x240 screen), otherwise everything works fine.

Excellent - just the kind of simple application I was after. Be nice if the windows all scaled but it is usable as it is. Getamap maps are good - if you use the printable image there is georeferenced URL which means you can autostitch them together if you really want...

I use it on a Dell Axim X50v with a compact flash GPS unit from Hong Kong. The display is full vga, so the maps are really easy to see without too much zooming in and out, or scrolling around.

I use it when hill walking, and it's really useful in the forests - the forest tracks can be very confusing, and often there isn't a line of sight to anything to get visually oriented on.

Cracking piece of software!

I also use the MAGIC website for finding the co-ord of calibration points on my home made maps:-

Not a great site, but useful.

Hi Doog,

Glad to hear GPSMap works OK on a VGA device - I've never seen it running in this mode, would it be possible to attach a screenshot? (a good PPC screenshot tool is Magic SS available from http://www.louterrailloune.com/?page_id=7).

Hi Matt! Here you go... Cap1 is top right corner of a map of part of cumbria, SW of Braithwaite. Cap3 is zoomed out to show coverage of whole map, in landscape mode. No GPS connected, so no data up there. I've also reduced the font size the device is using, which is why the text above the map looks a little odd. The maps look a lot better on the device than the grabs do on a pc.

SS Magic works well, but this site won't allow bmps to be uploaded, and I had to compress a bit to get them down to 256Kb.

I mostly use your s/w for checking position, rather than tracking myself. The axim is quite power hungry, so won't last all day. I just switch on and do spot checks when the map and my eyes don't agree, or when I've made it to the top of a hill [and want to make sure it's the right one  ].

Cheers,

Doog.

Excellent to see these screengrabs thanks. I've never had my hands on a VGA PPC for testing with. Interesting how it obviously automatically scales the button bar bitmaps for visibility, but a shame the GPS: and Sel: readouts look a bit truncated. I must check in the code to see if there's any "intelligent" handling of their size. Also good it works in landscape orientation - my PPC is too old for testing that too!

Do all the dialogs work OK?

i would like to understand the basic difference between a ppc and VGA ppc.
is Acer n35 one such ppc :?:

I have also come across jargons such as vga, hgva etc.,

Hi Sunil,

VGA is full vga rsolution: 640x480 pixels screen size. A lot of PPC are QVGA, which is quarter VGA [or 320x 240] and I would guess that HVGA is somewhere between the two.

Acer n35 might be one - I'm sure the Acer website will give you the specs for it.

HTH,

D.

I have it running on a Navigo SY-885, which I bought for under £60 at Ebuyer. It took a bit of fiddling to find all the dll's, but I really like the program now it's working.
