Just trying this now. I've got as far as getting the program to load, using the PocketPC2003 version, modified to use mfcce301 and aygshelp, but I don't seem to see any of the maps I've tried. No error messages, just no visible map... It would be nice if you could give us further details of the method you used!

I have it working on a HP iPaq HW6915 (WM5). I run TomTom Navigator 6 on this device and that uses a virtual port of some kind (GRD1) to access the built-in GPS.

I managed to get GPSMap working on COM7 (at 4800 baud, though I haven't tried changing that). TT6 still works - I haven't tried to run both concurrently, I have a feeling that won't work; not that I'm bothered.

Both WM5 and 6 have a built-in function that allows multiple apps to share the connection to a single GPS receiver. It does this by letting you map a "virtual" port (COMx or GPDx) to the "real" port your receiver hardware uses. The settings dialog for doing this is a bit confusing because it doesn't stop you using the same port for both - whatever that would achieve?!

Anyway, apps can still connect to the "real" port but only one at a time, while in theory multiple apps can connect to the "virtual" port and windows will handle the connection and data distribution jobs.

Depending on what the apps do however this may or may not work too well - for instance on my device I have a bluetooth GPS receiver and TomTom decides it will turn the bluetooth on and off whenever it likes, which certainly doesn't help any other apps listening to the GPS...

I'm also trying to get GPSMAP-OS to work on the SY-885. I have tried various copies of mfcce301 and aygshelp but I can't even get the program to load - I just get the 'Cannot find gpsmap (or one of its components)' error. I have edited the gpsmap to point to these dlls, not sure what else to do (though there seme to be umpteen different dummy dll zip files floating around the Internet, so its quite possible I haven't tried the right combination yet).

Any help appreciated.

Finally I managd to get a map to display. I followed the hint given by sunilsk on this thread http://craporola.freeforums.org/can-t-install-or-use-on-htc-s620-t53.html#156

I used the GPSMap-OS 1.51 for PPC2002 version from http://craporola.freeforums.org/craporola-homepage-down-t41.html
(GPSMap1.51_wce3_s.zip). I had to hex edit the aygshell reference to aygshelp.

I also used imgdecmp.dll (I think this is essential bit to getting the maps to display, the other versions don't seem to use this, prob using a shell image decode function in aygshell which is not present for wince).

mfce301 and doclist make up the other dlls.

Now to spend some time calibrating maps. Yippee![url][/url][url][/url]

Calibration is impossible on the SY-885. For some reason, clicking on the map does not move the cross hair cursor, or at least I can get it to move, but only by randomly dabbing at the screen and eventually it might move.

If I could generate .mcd files separately by hand it could be one answer. I've emailed the author for info on this.

Nice to know that you have had an inital break through in using this amazing application.

However to ease your efforts i suggest you the following method which will be quite easy to run the application:
(this requires some free MS downloads to run successfully, I guess this is easier that searching internet for files which eventually will not yield any results, actually the files its prompting has to be registered in the PPC libraries, while the GPSMap / GPSGO version available for download takes care of this but in some cases there might be difficulty).

So here is the steps:
1. Download MS evc++ 4.0 from MS website, SDK for Windows Mobile 2003, Active sync (4.0).
2. Download the latest SP of evc++4.0 I guess its SP5 now
3. Install these three applications in your desktop / Laptop
4. From Craporola main website download the source:

5. unzip and click on ..\\GPSMap1.51_eVC4_Workspace\GPSMap\GPSMap.vcw
6. This will open the evc++4.0, now connect your PPC and your personal Computer.
7. In evc++4.0, from main menu Execute the program I guess its F5 or F7 not sure even other wise check in the tabs. Now a GPSMap.exe with all the required libraries is loaded on to your PPC.
8. Disconnect the active sync after you find the GPSMap.exe in to your PPC main directory, close the applications on your desktop / laptop.
9. Now check if you GPSMap.exe works for you by clicking on it in your ppc.

Let me know if this works, this is quite tricky for a novice PC operator, but for a Software programmer or with a slight knowledge of PC, programming the steps described will be useful.

I have just loaded the GPSMap onto a Dell Axim X50V with a CF based GPS receiver (with 512Mb mem) and it seems to work fine. I am a glider pilot (duh!) so know that the GPS works (Com 4 4800 baud) as it is used for the gliding software SeeYou Mobile, but I needed a pice of software that would give me the OS reference when I land in a field on a cross-country flight. I have also got a piece of software from Anquet Maps with the UK OS maps, but it will not connect to the GPS so is useless. The VGA screens are good, I notice better visibility of the GPS position ref than Doog.

I'm running WM 2003SE, and I tend to have my Axim orientated in portrait mode, which is different from the screen shots from Doog. I am also running Magic Button as the program swap program, not the one indicated in Doog's screen shot.
I need to try GPSMap out in the field, so to speak, but it works at home, no probs. J

I am using the software on an Ipaq 4150 under Pocket PC 2003 - works very well - thanks Dr. Matt for an excellent program !

Can I ask the people with VGA machines, does GPSMap-OS use the extra pixels to display a more detailed map which covers a larger area? I mean it doesn't just double (quadruple?) up the pixels does it ?

GPSMap-OS is loaded onto my Dell Axim X50v, which is a full (640x480) res screen and the application certainly works at full VGA. i.e. all the application text / symbols are at the same resolution as all the other VGA applications. I can't answer exactly whether the map data is at VGA resolution because GPSMap has the ability to zoom in and out and hence the map resolution changes. But it certainly does seem to be at full VGA resolution. If I look at the map image in another application the resolution is the same. I hope this helps.

I guess the real test would be if you opened up the map in a PDA image viewer (and zoomed to 100%) then open up the same map in GPSmap (and zoomed to 100%) and then noted whether the two displays cover the same area of map. (e.g. from east street to main street in a town or whatever).

If GPSmap shows a smaller coverage of ground then it must be doubling up pixels. It depends how Windows Mobile copes with displaying a 320x240 application on a 640x480 device.

I'm interested 'cos it would be good if the VGA device could show greater detail of map.

OK, I've tried that and tried to attach two images that show the comparison. The first image is from ClearVue Image viewer, and shows the image section at 100% zoom, and the second shows the same image in GPSMap-OS at 50% zoom which is about (not identical) the same resolution. Of course the problem is that both are shown on the same VGA screen, whereas you really want to know whether the VGA screen at 100% shows (4x) more than a QVGA screen at 100%. I can't help. The images are smaller than the real screen because the screen capture application I have loaded is Pocket Screen Capture which only captures at QVGA resolution, even though it is a VGA screen.

I think what that shows is that GPS-Map doesn't take advantage of the extra pixels in a VGA device, because otherwise you wouldn't have to zoom out to 50% to cover the same area as Clearvue Image Viewer.

I wish shanks/ Dr. Matt would come back with confirmation, though.
