Largest usable map

I’ve just spent some time playing with various image sizes to establish a compromise between file size / map size, which resulted in the following and thought it might be of interest. The biggest map I found to work, based on 1 kilometre square tiles is, 15 x 15, using an image having 2345 x 2345 pi...

Just done a quick check for comparison. I have two maps based on 1K squares. One that covers an area of 132 square kilometres and it’s a 3.89M file. The other has an area of 126 square kilometres and it’s only 1.5M file. There is a difference in image quality but it’s marginal and only noticeable if...

It just seams to be me that doesn’t have a problem with this. I’m using significantly bigger maps than that with no problems. Are you using .JPG ? I have found these give the best value for memory. You can also vary the level of compression used, though you need a suitable image editor, which again ...

Just thought I’d mention seeing as how quite it is on here….. I borrowed a copy of Memory Map 2004 and ran it for the trial period. Whilst the mapping on the PC and then transfer to the PDA is good. The actual real time GPS tracking, location etc on the PDA is pants by comparison to GPSMap. I also c...

I’m still using V1.4 at the moment and have noticed a similar problem after using Tomtom v6. When selecting GPS, Connect, I get the “Error unable to open COM port”. So; I open Settings, Connection, and then just OK the screen (it still has com port 4 highlighted). Then just go back to Connect, and t...

I’m not into programming these things, I’m just a user and a new one at that, so sorry if I’m missing the point. I’m using .jpg maps, which I’ve made up from down loaded tiles and are over 1.5MB in the compressed form. They load, zoom and pan perfectly. The P350 I’m using still has 29MB of free RAM ...

I’m using a Mio P350 pocket PC which has a Samsung2440 400Hhz CPU, 3.5” LCD a built in GPS module, 20-channel SiRFStarIII chipset (£170 delivered new). It presently has 1 GB SD card with Tom Tom 6 for the road, V1.4 of GPSmap, a few MP3 albums and plenty of space left. I’m well impressed with the un...

I have been making up maps using free down loaded tiles, screen grabs etc. and using PowerPoint to stitch these bits together (using the Group function). If I then save the result as a file direct from PowerPoint then these some times don’t load, but if I first paste this into an image editor and th...
