Can I easily use my existing OS digital maps?

Postby RoyC on Thu Oct 22, 2009 3:58 pm

Hi - forgve my ignorance but I have just joined the group and haven't tried the software yet. If the following questions are naive and uninformed just humour me.

I have a WM device (HTC TYTN2) on which I currently run Anquet Maps. I have bought the whole of UK at 50,000:1 so I guess that does all I need. However, I am contemplating a possible change from WM to Android. One of the biggest obstacles to change is the fact that Anquet Maps only runs on WM so I would lose all my investment in the OS maps and the ability to use my device whilst walking. Two questions therefore arise; first is it possible/likely that an Android version of this software might become available and second, would my current electronic maps be of any value to me. Do the electronic maps carry calibration details or would a manual calibration be necessary.
If the answer to the first question is NO then I would still appreciate an answer to question 2 on the basis that I might want to use this software on the WM device anyway.
Thanks

Roy

Are you asking if GPSMap-OS will be available on Android? If so I can't really answer that at the moment as I know very little about the Android operating system, but there's always the possibility. Unfortunately I also have no knowledge of the Anquet maps format, so I don't know if your investment will be of any use for other apps - perhaps someone else may be able to help answer that one?

As far as I can tell, one of the rules that the OS impose with their digital mapping is that it is distributed in a non-public format. I don't know the details of Anquet but you may find a hacking tool to extract the maps. There is, for example, a tool call OziMapTrans that will, among other things, extract Memory-map's maps. But you'll be breaking the rules of your licence if you use it.

If you are set on Android, there is a free tool called Trekbuddy - but that, too, will need maps from somewhere.
