Yes you are right, currently GPSMap is not VGA resolution aware; that means on a VGA device it displays "pixel doubled". So as you have correctly observed, when you set the zoom level to 50% on a VGA device you see the map at its true dot-for-dot pixel resolution.
A future release may support VGA resolution properly, but at the moment it's not a priority because it appears to work very well already (including landscape orientation support).
As an aside, I find that on my new(ish) VGA PDA (hp iPAQ 214) the performance of the map drawing/panning is noticeably worse than on my old QVGA iPAQ 2210, however at 50% zoom the performance is similar, pointing at the pixel-doubling as cause for the performance drop.
