Map calibration conversion

Postby jolly47roger on Sun Nov 02, 2008 10:35 pm

I'm working on a (Windows) program to convert map calibrations - MAP (Ozi), JPR, TFW, GUX(GPSU), GMI(GPSTUNER), MCD(GPSMAP/GO) to and from each other. That means you can calibrate maps on a bigger screen (or with different datums) and/or import image files that already have calibrations. I hope to have a Beta version around the end of November. If anyone has specific requirements please put them on this thread - I may be able to help but it's not guaranteed!

The first version of the calibration conversion program is at http://www.the-thorns.org.uk/mapping.

Version 1.0.0 of MAPC2MAPC is now available as above and includes the functionality to calibrate maps as well as convert existing calibrations.

Thanks alot for providing this, just what I need for GPSMAP-OS on my SY-885 (which can't do on screen calibration).

It seemed to work fine on the first map I tried, I can open all the calibrations fine in the program and do a View Calibrated Map to double check (after I only entered 4 digits and wondered why it didn't work in the SY885).

But on the second one, the .map calibration file opens and VCM is ok, but if I open the .mcd, I get a msg box (title llconv) "runtime error '6': Overflow". The other files appear to be ok too, just the mcd that has the problem.

I get the same error if I open the .map, Write calibrations then Open the newly written .mcd

I've attached the calibration files, hope this can be fixed.
Cheers, Gary

Sorry about that; a new version 1.0.1 is available for download. Let me know if that fixes the problem. [For some reason, I was only coping with reading .mcd files for the UK which have a different format whereas you are out in the Atlantic, I believe. The .mcd file should have worked with GPSGO]

Ok thanks, it no longer gives the overflow error, but the coordinates to check against in the VCM window are not coming up in OS form.

I'm not actually in the Atlantic (last time I checked) - but in deepest Chandlers Ford, Southampton. I did a local map and that works fine with OS coords coming up in the VCM screen.

The overflow problem came when I tried to calibrate a map in Scotland, just north of Loch Lomond. NN 31000 17000 (SW corner) to 37000 20000 (NW). That's the data you have in the zip. It would be good if the VCM for that could show the OS style coords. I plan to do a whole load more maps before we depart for north of the border. I also plan to go to Skye - how far out into the Atlantic do we have to go before OS coords stop working ;-)

Essentially I just some re-assurance that the mcds will work before I get there as Internet access will be limited - so a VCM that shows the OS coords for mcds of Highland/Isles would be good.

There are two flavours of the pocket-PC software - GPSMAPOS and GPSGO. They both use a .mcd calibration file but the formats are different. I decided that if the data was in the UK I would use the GPSMAPOS format and the other one outside. 'In the UK' was defined as latitude 50 to 60 and longitude 1E to 7W - but in deference to Norfolk, Shetland and St Kilda I will extend that in the next version. Skye (and Loch Lomond) are well inside. The same rule is used displaying calibrated maps to decide whether to display OS coordinates or UTM.

But in the .map (and others) file you sent me the longitude was 23 West (hence my comment about the Atlantic!). I can't work out how that happened if you calibrated using OS coordinates. Can you try again, please, using some different points? If that still fails, can you copy the text from the logging window to me, please?

Thanks for the detailed explanation. Sounds like I must have made some kind of error when calibrating, though I'm sure I tried it twice and got the same error... anyway:

I just tried it again, going through the calibration, writing them out, then reloading the mcd then VCM and it was fine. Thanks for that.

BTW I assume it makes no difference in the order and position of the calibration points. I just did 2 - SW corner and NE corner, which I assume is adequate as the image is aligned with the map grid.

I'm pleased it's working. GPSMAP only uses 2 points; the order doesn't matter. You can also check the calibration by loading the image and .mcd onto your portable device; loading the map in GPSMAP and clicking on it.

There's now a new version of the Calibration conversion program with additional function : Full-screen calibration of maps; cropping and rescaling maps whilst retaining the Calibration and writing tiles compatible with Trekbuddy and others. http://www.the-thorns.org.uk/mapping

The trekbuddy tile support could not have come at a better time - I just got a Nokia 5800 2 days ago and installed TB, so I have to try this out tonight! Thanks alot.
