Trail File conversion

Postby jolly47roger on Thu Oct 30, 2008 6:45 pm

I've developed a little program to convert TXF and RXF files to the TRL formats used by GPSMAPOS and GPSGO. This means you can use a mapping program like Memory-map or GPSU to plot a route and upload it to your handheld. (If your mapping program won't write these files then GPSU will convert most formats and is recommended for working with a GPS unit).

Many routes are already available : Walkingworld, for example, allows downloads of its routes as RXF files.

The program - written in Basic - runs under Windows and XP and should work with Vista, too. It also converts TRL files back to TXF.

The webpage is http://www.the-thorns.org.uk/mapping

Both programs work happily as advertised...though I found it simplest to use .gmi as the base calibration...

What I was after, if possible, was a means of converting some form of text file to a .pts file to be read by the GPSGO app. I realize that the app itself does not have an import feature, but it appears it is quite happy to read a [mapname].pts file and place those points when map [mapname] is loaded.

I tried making a .trl with the required points, and displaying the route as dots...while that does show the distinct points, I wanted a means of displaying point names and changing the marker....

Thanks for your efforts with these apps.

Hello there down under!

From a compatibility point of view, a Maptech Marks file (.mxf) would seem to be a good format to convert .pts from and to. If you can PM me a .pts file I'll see what I can do.

The latest version now converts .PTS files in GPSMAP/GPSGO to and from .MXF (Maptech marks files). Point attributes are hard-coded as blue crosshairs at present....
