I don't know about anyone else but I tend to store map files in the same directory.

It might be useful if the load map and load trail dialogues defaulted to the last directory used by GPSMAP (or GPSGo). The current default 'all eligible files' results in a list cluttered with all the random non-map jpgs that I happen to have on my PDA.

Perhaps other people work differently. My workaround has been to put my map directory first in alphabetical order.

The latest release of GPSMap-OS defaults to looking for map images in any folders called "GPSMap Maps", and similarly GPSGO looks first in "GPSGO Maps". If you create folders with these names (probably best at the top level of your storage card) and put all your map images inside them then your troubles should hopefully be over! Let us know if it works..
